About the Versace Tribute Collection
Donatella Versace created the Tribute Collection as an homage to her brother and to mark the 20th anniverary of his tragic death. She sent out a parade of looks inspired by Gianni's most emblematic works and did so through music, words, design, and casting. She wanted to celebrate "a genius, an icon, her brother" and pulled his key prints and pieces from archives from 1991-97. This period saw some of Versace's iconic collections: Vogue, Metal Mesh, My Friend Elton, and many, many more remarkable collections.
As mentioned, the collection features 12 of Gianni Versace’s most iconic prints from 1991 -1997. From each of these iconic patterns, Donatella Versace remade and reinterpreted the blouses, square-shouldered jackets, leggings, catsuits, corsets, trenches, mini sheaths, and maxi skirts. She remade a few pieces in their entirety, most she decided to reclaim through her own specifications: more day wear, sharper shoulders, fewer slits.
“This collection is a Tribute to the life and works of Gianni. We pay homage to not only his artistic genius but to who he was as a man, and above all, as my brother. Gianni was an exceptional person for how he celebrated each day as though it was extraordinary and for how he always approached life with a smile on his lips. Each year Gianni lived, he lived to its fullest: throughout his career, he created collections that to this day are considered a cultural point of reference and inspiration to many. It would be impossible to commemorate Gianni’s entire world in a single collection, therefore, I have decided to honor his legacy with his beloved prints and dazzling metal mesh.
This collection is for you, Gianni.”
